Getting Married in Jamaica: Legal and Other Requirements

Legal Ceremonies

Legal ceremonies are most often performed by non-denominational ministers (“Marriage Officers”). They can be performed 7 days a week. The resorts will generally charge an additional fee (above their wedding package price) for the minister’s services.

Following the ceremony, the couple will receive two documents:

Certified copy of Marriage License: This an immediate proof of marriage but not an official marriage certificate. Its purpose is to allow you to make any immediate required changes in the private sector (e.g. to bank accounts, insurances, etc.).
The official Marriage Certificate: This will be couriered to the couple up to two months after the wedding. It is usually applied for by the minister; confirm with him/her.

Documentation Requirements for Legal Ceremonies

Certified copy of bride and groom’s Birth Certificates which include the father’s name or an explanation must be provided.
Valid passports.
Civil Wedding Registration Form
Certified copy of any name change document (e.g. adoption papers, if applicable)

Note: If any of the required Canadian documentation is in French, it must be translated into English and notarized. This must be provided with a photocopy of the French originals.

Also note that Jamaica is not open to doing same sex destination weddings.

Additional Original Documentation for Special Circumstances:

Divorce certificate if either the bride or groom were previously married
Death certificate if a former spouse has passed away

Residency Requirements

You only require to be in Jamaica for 24 hours before the ceremony as long as you have applied for a marriage license in advance.

You can apply by calling the Jamaican Ministry of National Security at 1-876-906-4908. You can also email them at customerservice@moj.gov.jm. There is a nominal fee for the license (about $100 Cdn).

However, many resorts require that you be in the country for three business days before the ceremony. This is mainly to allow for time for the coordinator to ensure that everything is in order.

Two witnesses who are at least 18 years of age are required for any legal ceremony. The resort can typically provide you with witnesses if you need them as part of your wedding package. However, if the witnesses are provided by the couple, they will need to present:
